The Challenge
How can we inspire rally fans to contribute video content to Pineamite?
Pineamite, a crowd streaming platform for rally fans. Their vision is to empower rally fans to experience and share every moment of the action, transforming the way motorsports are connected and celebrated. However, the platform faced significant challenges in user adoption and engagement:
📉
Low Contribution Rates
Rally fans hesitated to upload videos, which is critical for the app's success.
📶
Technical Barriers
Fans at remote rally locations experienced connectivity issues, affecting their ability to upload videos in real time.
✅
Engagement
Users lacked clear incentives and guidance to actively participate in the platform.

Stakeholder interview
Learning the vision behind Pineamite
In the initial conversation with the Pineamite founder, we explored the platform’s vision and the challenges it seeks to address. The insights provided represent the stakeholder's understanding of rally fans’ needs and motivations, forming the foundation for further validation through user research.
📈
Increasing user participation
The platform’s success hinges on rally fans actively contributing videos. Incentives like leaderboards and rewards were suggested as effective ways to motivate users.
️📋
Simplifying the rally experience
Rally fans struggle with planning their experience, particularly when locating the best viewing spots. Tools to centralise information and guide fans were highlighted as key priorities.
️🙌️
Building a community
Pineamite should become a hub for rally enthusiasts, fostering connections between fans, drivers, and sponsors through features like profiles and car showcases.
User Research
Understanding the full rally experience
To understand user behaviours and motivations, I conducted interviews with 5 rally enthusiasts with 3 primary goals in mind:
🧑🔧
Evaluate digital engagement during rallies
Assess how fans use digital tools and platforms to engage with the rally and stay informed.
🚦
Understand a typical rally day experience
Gain insights into how fans plan, prioritise, and experience their time at a rally.
🏎️
Understand motivations for attending live rallies
Explore what drives fans to attend rally events in person rather than watching from home.
Competitor Analysis
Analysing the rally media landscape
By understanding what these apps did well, where they fell short, and how they engaged users, I used this analysis to help shape the Pineamite app to fill gaps, differentiate itself, and deliver a more tailored experience for rally fans.

Rally.tv

The competitor matrix highlighted key gaps in the market, revealing opportunities for Pineamite to provide a more user-focused experience by addressing unmet needs, such as real-time crowd-streaming and rally-specific planning tools.

Affinity Mapping
Organising insights to understand fan needs
Affinity mapping revealed the following insights from the interviews, organising over 70 data points into the following themes:
💥
The need to be close to the action
Hearing car noises and being near the track define the rally experience.
🔍
Extensive planning is required
Fans want all rally details in one place to make planning easier.
👓
A lack of guidance on viewing spots
Fans want to find the best views, but information is scarce, often relying on word of mouth.
🗺️
A desire to explore more stages
Fans wish to visit multiple corners, but this is often physically unfeasible.

User persona
Meet Dave, a passionate rally enthusiast
Dave represents the challenges and needs of rally fans. His persona reflects key research insights, guiding the solution to better meet his needs and enhance his rally experience.

Quick facts
30s
Often goes to events local to him with family and friends
Enjoys documenting rallies on his phone
“It's all about the noise, being close to the action”
Insights
Finds the amount of planning necessary a bit of a pain
The action is exciting but it is short lived
Unsure if where he’s standing is the best spot
Opportunies
Assist Dave in finding the best vantage point
Enable him to see more live action than he can see in-person
Provide resources to assist him with planning his rally experience
Defining the problem
Setting the direction for the solution
With all the insights gathered from user research, competitor analysis, and using Dave as our representative user, the problem statement and hypothesis were defined as follows:
🛠️
Problem Statement
Motor rally enthusiasts need a way to experience the action from multiple corners of the rally, as it’s not feasible to travel to all the vantage points they want to visit in person.
💡
Hypothesis
By providing rally spectators with an easy and convenient way to film and upload videos of rallies, Pineamite will achieve a higher rate of satisfaction among rally goers with their overall experience at the event. This will be true when an increased number of rally attendants post and watch videos of events on the app while at the event.
Ideation
Rapid ideation process
During ideation, I explored interface concepts for the Pineamite app to tackle the user need of locating optimal viewing points.

Low-fidelity wireframes
From sketches to wireframes
From quick sketches to low- and mid-fidelity wireframes, I developed initial designs to align features with user needs. This process prepared the prototypes for conducting the first rounds of usability testing.

Usability Testing
Refining the experience through usability testing
Through user testing, it became clear that adjustments were needed in the information architecture, colour contrast of buttons, and the usability of the "at-event" and "planning" flows. To address these issues, I implemented the following:

Reordering live rally content
Simplified language to remove jargon and make the process easier to understand.
Simplifying navigation with event toggles
Made the toggle for past and upcoming events easier to press and fixed it to the bottom half of the screen for better usability.
Improving button visibility
Increased button contrast for better visual clarity.
